LOST & Found - Liner Notes

A Short diversion on the WHo’S, WHy’s and wheretofores regarding the NEW “LOST AND FOUND” album

You really want to know a bit more? Isn’t the music enough on its own? Doesn't it speak for itself? Ok then…

It could easily have been an 18 track album, maybe even more if I truly wanted to represent where I was in mid 2008. With the help and advice of a few close confidantes, I whittled it down to a much more succinct and cohesive statement, an easily digestible 12 songs. Those who plump for the CD get a few extra treats that, although they didn’t make the cut, sit nicely in the style and feel of the album proper. More info about them below.

All tracks were mastered by the brilliant Stuart Avery, I highly recommend him if you want to add a personal and thoughtful final polish to your musical work - find him here stuartavery.co.uk

In terms of the concept of the recording, the idea was to use as much from the era as possible. In only a couple instances were new drums recorded (to replace virtual instruments). Some songs have been dismantled and remantled (if you’ll allow the clumsy word invention) as all that remained of them were fully mixed demo versions, or drumming guides, or vocal backing tracks. This is either because the projects were worked up in studios other than that of your humble self-archivist, or they were lost in the great laptop theft of 2009. “Back up, back up, back up” was the mantra of 2010 and beyond.

But now we back up through time itself, to rewrite the fate of the first ‘Gillan Edgar’ album, a ‘what could have been’ made manifest. Just a little late to the party.

In the Remote Control, the first proper band I helmed, more often than not we’d finish our shows with a purposefully anthemic builder of a song called “Nothing Is Ever Lost”.

Part of the premise was that if something is transmitted in some way, some kind of signal, that it might dissipate and fade but it’s never fully gone.

Lost and Found is one such thing that almost was.

I’m a victim of my own impatience, eager to start the next thing, to explore new ideas. Inspiration doesn’t seem to be a problem for me. Focus, commitment and work ethic however seem to be low down on my list of priorities.

Bringing Lost and Found to life has therefore been an exercise in working against my weaknesses and tendencies. It’s an odd mixture of relief, pride, excitement and dread to now acknowledge that the whole project is complete.

A physical release signifies the finish line more definitively for me than just a digital distribution; hence the ‘mini vinyl’ style CDs now available in limited numbers from the Bandcamp. But of course, you can stream the 12 tracks on whichever service you subscribe to.

First draft of the album cover, deemed far too ‘washed out’ for the ramshackle vibrancy of the tracks.

What follows is rather a dry telling of the nuts and bolts of each track, although probably good to have it all written somewhere. You can decide yourself what the songs might mean.
